By day Block Place, a lane hidden off Little Collins Street in the heart of Melbourne, is bustling with alfresco cafes and shopping. Come at lunchtime and you’d struggle to find your way through the trendy crowd. Late at night however, in the middle of winter, the place is tranquil and deserted. Rain runs off the awnings onto the bluestone pavement and the occasional truck rumbles past along Little Collins Street.
